His 1997 album, "Blue Moon Swamp," won the Grammy for best rock album.

A run of limited edition JDK posters, printed at Iskra Print Collective, will be given away to ticket holders following the Neko Case show on January 27.

Read below for insight into artist Michael Dabbs’s inspiration for his design.

"The fables told on Neko Case's most recent release personify animals to depict an intricate and layered story. This fairy-tale quality has led to a piece of art designed to look like the opening image in a storybook—a large initial letter and, in this instance, an intricate etching depicting the scene of a drowning wolf, victimized by the cunning fox confessor. The wolf has been fooled by the fox into believing that it can control the tide. The result of this trickery is a little oceanside dining on a carcass, which metaphorically speaks to a deeper questioning of where to place one's faith.”

"Rob Zombie is a style—a unique sound, look, and feel. Even within the larger genres of metal and horror, he creates experiences that are distinctly identifiable. This is why we love Rob Zombie. So in making the poster for his show at Higher Ground, I kept one thing in mind: trying to imitate this style would be only that—trying. It is his as only he can do it. Considering this, I hope you'll find that my print approaches Rob Zombie topics with fittingly macabre imagery, but in a style that avoids mimicry.

"It could also be said that this poster is just one proud product of the most enjoyable Tuesday-afternoon arts-and-crafts program a sixteenth-century torture dungeon ever saw."

    Posted: Jan 3, 2008

A run of limited edition JDK posters, printed at Iskra Print Collective, will be given away to ticket holders following the Mars Volta show on January 9.

Artist Erik Petersen found inspiration for his poster design in the band's music, as well as in the following quote from Mars Volta band member, Cedric Bixler-Zavala.

“The 'Volta' is taken from a Federico Fellini book about his films, what he characterizes as a changing of scene, or a turnaround; a new scene to him is called 'volta'... And 'Mars,' we're just fascinated by science fiction…and it's something that ultimately looked [good]…as in anything I write, its meaning is always up to the listener. As the way we write songs and words, if it looks great on paper then to us it's like painting, so if it looks good meaning the second, then people usually have a better interpretation than we ever would. ”

The Fellini reference presented a direct link to the band's angular aural aesthetic, allowing the two to merge as lines in space and time. The eye is Fellini’s. It's printed on chrome paper so that the participant becomes the viewer—and vice versa. more

Headliners deSoL will help set you up for a Feliz Navidad with another of the amazing shows that have made them a Point favorite!

The Point will also be set up to send some Christmas Cheer abroad by collecting Care packages for Vermont National Guard troops serving overseas, particularly in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Small, simple items can make a huge difference to our neighbors stationed in the Middle East this Christmas...simple things like foods to remind them of home, coffee and tea, personal care items like sunscreen and handy wipes, and of course cards, letters, and pictures of home.

And everyone who brings something for a care package will receive a 2008 Ski & Ride season button and coupon book for free! You can check out a list of suggested items online at Pointfm.com more

    Posted: Nov 6, 2007

The Putumayo & Cumbancha World Music Series continues in November with Vieux Farka Toure. Son of legendary guitarist Ali Farka Touré, Vieux Farka Touré picks up where his father left off with soulful African blues guitar riffs that sound eerily reminiscent of John Lee Hooker's delta blues. Yet Vieux brings youthful energy and modern influences to his sound, making him one of the most talked-about new artists on the world music scene.

In December, the Putumayo & Cumbancha World Music Series' focus on the music of Mali continues with Tinariwen--one of the most exciting and exotic groups from the musically rich West African nation. Tinariwen's trance-inducing desert blues blends North African rhythms with pulsing rock and roll energy. It's no wonder Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant is one of their biggest fans!

As a special bonus, Cumbancha will be selling the brand-new CD by Malian superstar Habib Koité for the highly-discounted price of $8 exclusively during the show. more

Higher Ground, in conjunction with Anais Mitchell, Michael Chorney of Magic City, and Ben T. Matchstick, present Hadestown (a folk opera)--an original work of music theatre based on the tragic Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Hadestown returns to Vermont in late November and early December for seven shows.

Hadestown brings the timeless story of Orpheus and Eurydice into a contemporary context that is poetically, musically and visually fresh. Hadestown is set in a post-apocalyptic world that takes inspiration from Depression-era America: the underworld is not the land of the dead but an exploitative company town. Old-fashioned symbols of poverty and exploitation are fused with a kind of futurism to prompt reflection on just how much we’ve evolved (or devolved) as a society since the 1930s.

The poster is a fusion of different esthetics and celebrates contrast. The gothic type which creates a skeleton represents rock and death metal, while the plaid represents punk/southern rock music. There is contrast not only between genders of music, but literally through color and more specifically black vs. white, death vs. life, and old vs. new.

The two hour film "Keep on Marchin'" is an audio/visual feast, and captures almost every song played the night of the performance. A bonus film is also included on the DVD featuring in-depth interviews of the band.

Though the band continues to rack up Grammy nominations, the Allstars have gained their reputation outside of the studio by floor-stomping their jammed-out southern gospel blues back and forth across the country.

"After so many nights on the road, I was almost burned out," guitarist Luther Dickinson said, "But the crowd was so cool and Chris Chew (the bassist) was preachin the blues; and my brother Cody (drums) and I found ourselves inspired. We are all proud to have this one show documented so well."

"Keep on Marchin'" filmmaker Johnny Reid, who also produced the concert film "IT" for Vermont's legendary rocker's Phish, said "the night of the show, the band was totally zoned in, it was one of those rare evenings when everything just clicked. Their performance reminds me of some of the amazing live concerts I use to see in the 70's, and the entire production crew, and the Higher Ground team made it all possible by keeping that super-high energy feeling throughout the evening".

The DVD marks the first release on the Allstars' own label, Songs of the South Records. Mountain Entertainment, LLC who produced the DVD, and was founded by Vermont native Robert Lynch of Waitsfield, VT and Reid, are currently in the final stages of negotiating a U.S. HD broadcast air-date, and they hope to have a summer 07 broadcast premiere. A better look at how your tax dollars are being spent...

    Posted: Apr 30, 2007

Want to see how your tax dollars are being spent?? You should. HG's resident artist, Jess Bachman, has launched the 2008 version of the "Death and Taxes" budget graph.

"Death and Taxes" is a representational poster of the federal discretionary budget; the amount of money that is spent at the discretion of your elected representatives in Congress. Basically, your federal income taxes. The data is from the President's budget request for 2008. It will be debated, amended, and approved by Congress by October 1st to begin the fiscal year.

The poster provides a uniquely revealing look at our national priorities, that fluctuate yearly, according to the wishes of the President, the power of Congress, and the will of the people. If you pay taxes, then you have paid for a small part of everything in the poster.

Limited edition print to be given away at Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

    Posted: Apr 9, 2007

Here's a sneak peak of the limited edition JDK print to commemorate the upcoming Clap Your Hands Say Yeah show on April 12. A limited number of prints will be given away to ticket holders following the show.

The print was designed by artist Tyler Stout. Read below for insight on Tyler's inspiration for this design...

"I started off by seeing what previous artwork Clap Your Hands had used in their CDs and website, and much of it is very childlike and rough textures and whatnot. So I incorporated simple character drawings into a piece that had a lot of different textures and patterns. I focused on the lyric from their current CD Some Loud Thunder, taking a lyric from their title song that goes:

'I have dug a hole for all the world to see. A cannonball as big as the ocean could come from the sky.'

So that's kinda what the big asteroid thing in the middle of the poster is. Basically a big object tearing through the sky. Other lyrics that I pulled references from include the clouds (heaven), sirens, live tv, shark bite, radio, dead king hanging, bloodless eye, and fish (bottom of the sea). These are all elements they talk about, so I incorporated those into the poster.

Overall, I wanted a poster that would stand out as a two color piece, and be a cool addition to the artwork they have already put out. Their music is very fun and kinda drunken sounding, so I tried to let that influence me as well. " more

Willy Mason returns to where it all started.

    Posted: Mar 12, 2007

On April 11, Willy Mason returns to HG--which served as a unique launching pad for his career.

For the full scoop on how it all began, read below...

Back in May of 2003, an up and coming artist by the name of Conor Oberst was making his debut performance at Higher Ground in Winooski, VT. Oberst, better known along with his band as Bright Eyes had a special treat for the folks in attendance that evening.

The night before, while performing in Northampton, Conor and crew met and took a liking to a highscooler from Marthas Vineyard. The highschool student named Willy Mason happily partied the night away while playing a few songs, wound up on their bus, and woke the following day to find himself in Vermont.

"I woke up on their tour bus in Vermont, and that night Conor, without warning, called me onto the stage. That was my first gig off of the island. The whole thing was surreal."

Soon after that night, Willy and Conor struck up a friendship that would lead to Willy's signing to Team Love, Conors newly developed record label. Since then, Willy has toured with the likes of Death Cab for Cutie, Ben Kweller, Unbusted, and Radiohead. He has also played such venues as the Glastonbury Festival, South By Southwest, and the Offshore Ale House.

Willy Mason is currently on tour in support of his upcoming album "If The Ocean Gets Rough" This will mark his first performance in Vermont since that life changing evening back in 2003. more
