L. Shankar is widely celebrated as a musical genius and legend, held in the highest esteem by his peers. A vocalist and violin virtuoso, he is regarded as one of the pioneers of the East-West genre who first introduced South Indian music to Western audiences, paving the way for others to follow. As an international touring artist with a career spanning decades, Shankar has earned global acclaim through his award-winning solo projects and collaborations with icons such as Frank Zappa, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Michael Jackson, Madonna, and many other renowned musicians. Since 1980, Shankar has performed on a 10-string stereophonic Double Violin—known as the LSD (L. Shankar Double Violin)—which he designed and invented to encompass the full range of the orchestral string family. His 1980 release Who’s To Know and Phil Collins’ solo debut Face Value introduced audiences to the distinctive sound of Shankar’s Double Violin.

His innovative and intricate pallavis, featuring unique rhythmic cycles and popularized through his acclaimed ECM Records and other albums, have set new benchmarks in classical music and influenced countless artists. The combination of Shankar’s vocals, Double Violin, and compositions has earned him worldwide recognition as an innovator in Indian Classical Music and World Music. His unmistakable sound has resonated across numerous albums, continuing to captivate audiences and critics alike.

In addition to his classical work, Shankar has released celebrated pop, rock, and EDM albums, and composed for award-winning films, documentaries, and television series—including the legendary film maker Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ (Grammy-winning), The Passion of the Christ, Born Into Brothels (Oscar-winning), and the hit series Heroes and Heroes Reborn.
